Staying safe on Spark Jobs
Last updated 28 September 2026
Real employers never ask you to pay
Never pay to apply, interview, train, get a "starter kit", or be hired. If a "job" asks you for money, gift cards, crypto, or to buy equipment and get "reimbursed" later, it's a scam.
Protect your personal information
- Don't share your Social Insurance Number (SIN), bank details, or photos of your ID until you have a real, written job offer from an employer you've checked out. A SIN is normally needed only after you're hired, for payroll.
- Never accept money into your account to "forward", "reship packages", or "process payments". Those are money-laundering scams.
- Keep conversations on Spark until you've confirmed the employer is real.
Red flags
- Pay that sounds too good to be true for easy work
- A job offer with no interview, or an interview only by text
- Pressure to decide right now
- Personal email addresses (like @gmail.com) for a "big company"
- Requests to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, or another app right away
- Vague job details, or no real company address or website
Meeting for an interview or a gig
- Meet in a public place or at a real business address during the day.
- Tell a friend or family member where you're going and when you'll be back.
- Arrange your own transportation.
- If you're under 18, tell a parent or guardian before any interview or gig.
- Leave if anything feels wrong. Your safety matters more than any job.
Know your rights (Ontario)
- From October 1, 2026, Ontario's general minimum wage is $17.95 per hour. Students under 18 who work 28 hours a week or less while school is in session, or who work during a school break or summer holidays, can be paid the student minimum wage of $16.90 per hour.
- There are minimum ages for certain workplaces, for example 14 for stores and offices, 15 for factories and restaurant kitchens, and 16 for construction.
